The best way the customer can help with the task at hand is to provide as much information as possible (pictures are great) or if it’s an assembly sending the make and model help tons when it comes to estimates etc
I went to a tech school for carpentry and after that just started working. I have 8+ years in the handyman business.
Good help is hard to come by. If there is trust, they do good work and they were able to fulfill your requests then I’d say keep them around.
